Structural Components

At the heart of every container gantry crane lies a robust and precisely engineered portal frame designed to handle large dynamic loads during lifting, traveling, and stacking operations. The main structural components include the legs and gantry, bridge girder, and trolley with spreader.

 

Legs and Gantry: The gantry structure is supported by two or four vertical steel legs, which form the foundation of the crane. These legs are typically of box-type or truss-type design, depending on load capacity and working conditions. They support the weight of the entire crane, including the girder, trolley, spreader, and container load. The gantry travels either on rails (as in Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes – RMGs) or rubber tires (as in Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes – RTGs), enabling flexible operation across container yards.

Bridge Girder: The bridge girder spans the working area and serves as the rail track for the trolley. Made from high-strength steel, it is designed to withstand torsional stress and maintain structural rigidity during lateral trolley movement.

Trolley and Spreader: The trolley moves along the girder, carrying the hoisting system and spreader used to lift, transport, and precisely position containers. Its smooth, stable motion ensures efficient loading and stacking operations across multiple container rows, maximizing yard productivity.

Container Gantry Crane with Spreader and Twist Locks

A gantry crane equipped with a container spreader and twist locks provides a reliable and automated solution for handling ISO containers in ports, logistics terminals, and intermodal yards. Its advanced design ensures safety, precision, and high operational efficiency.

Advanced Anti-Sway System for Stable Lifting

Container sway, particularly under windy conditions or sudden motion, poses a serious risk in crane operations. Modern container gantry cranes integrate both active and passive anti-sway systems to ensure smooth, precise, and safe handling.

Active Sway Control: Using real-time motion feedback and predictive algorithms, the crane control system automatically adjusts acceleration, deceleration, and travel speed. This minimizes pendulum movement of the load, ensuring stability during lifting and traveling.
