Main Components of a Semi Gantry Crane

1. Girder (Bridge Beam)

The girder is the horizontal structural beam along which the trolley and hoist travel. In a semi gantry crane, this can be a single girder or double girder configuration depending on the lifting capacity and span requirements.

2. Hoist

The hoist is the lifting mechanism responsible for raising and lowering the load. It typically consists of a wire rope or chain hoist, and it moves horizontally along the trolley.

3. Trolley

The trolley travels back and forth across the girder and carries the hoist. It allows the load to be moved laterally along the span of the crane, providing horizontal motion in one axis.

4. Supporting Structure (Legs)

A semi gantry crane has one end supported by a vertical leg on the floor, and the other end is supported by the building structure (such as a wall-mounted track or column). The leg may be fixed or mounted on wheels, depending on whether the crane is stationary or mobile.

5. End Trucks

Located at each end of the girder, end trucks house the wheels and drive systems that enable the crane to move along its track or runway. For semi gantry cranes, these are typically found on the floor-supported side.

6. Controls

The crane’s operations are managed through a control system, which may include a wired pendant, wireless remote control, or operator cabin. Controls govern the hoist, trolley, and crane movements.

7. Drives

Drive motors power the movement of both the trolley on the girder and the crane along its track. They are designed to ensure smooth, precise, and synchronized operation.

8. Power Supply System

The crane’s electrical components receive power from a cable reel, festoon system, or conductor rail. In some portable or smaller versions, battery power may also be used.

9. Cables and Wiring

A network of electrical cables and control wires delivers power and transmits signals between the control unit, drive motors, and hoist system.

10. Braking System

Integrated brakes ensure that the crane can stop safely and precisely during operation. This includes braking for the hoist, trolley, and traveling mechanisms.

Advantages

1. Space-Saving Structure

A semi gantry crane uses an existing building structure (such as a wall or column) on one side as part of its support system, while the other side runs on a ground rail. This eliminates the need for a full set of gantry supports, which not only saves valuable floor space but also reduces overall structural and installation costs.

2. Versatile Application

Semi gantry cranes are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, making them a highly versatile solution for a wide range of industries such as manufacturing, warehouses, workshops, shipyards, and logistics centers. Their adaptable design allows seamless integration into existing facilities without major modifications.

3. Enhanced Operational Flexibility

By occupying only one side of the floor with a rail system, semi gantry cranes maximize open floor space, enabling forklifts, trucks, and other mobile equipment to move freely on the ground without obstruction. This makes material handling more efficient and streamlined, especially in confined or high-traffic work areas.

4. Cost Efficiency

Compared to full gantry cranes, semi gantry cranes require fewer materials for structure fabrication and reduced shipping volume, which leads to lower initial investment and transportation costs. They also involve less complex foundation work, further cutting down on civil construction expenses.

5. Simplified Maintenance

With a reduced number of componentssuch as fewer support legs and railssemi gantry cranes are easier to maintain and inspect. This results in lower maintenance costs and less downtime, ensuring more reliable daily operations and longer equipment lifespan.
