Overview

The Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (RTG) is a highly efficient container handling solution widely used in ports, container yards, logistics centers, and freight terminals. Designed for flexible outdoor operations, the RTG crane adopts a rubber-tired traveling system that allows free movement without fixed rails, making it ideal for large and open working areas. Its excellent mobility and stacking capability help improve cargo handling efficiency while reducing infrastructure costs.

The main structure of the RTG crane includes the main girder, supporting outriggers, tire traveling mechanism, and lifting trolley. The main girder is manufactured from high-strength steel and serves as the primary load-bearing component, providing excellent rigidity and stability during lifting operations. Guide rails mounted on the girder allow the trolley to move smoothly for accurate container positioning. The outriggers support the entire crane structure and ensure safe and stable operation under heavy loads.

The tire traveling system is driven by multiple independent motors and braking devices, enabling flexible steering, stable movement, and precise positioning within the yard. The lifting trolley is equipped with an electric or hydraulic hoisting mechanism for efficient lifting and transportation of containers and heavy cargo.

To ensure reliable performance, the RTG crane is also equipped with an advanced electrical control system integrating PLC control, sensors, and multiple safety protection devices. With features such as flexible mobility, reliable operation, and low maintenance requirements, the Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane has become an essential material handling equipment in modern logistics and port industries.

Compositions

♦Long Travel Mechanism

The long travel mechanism is the driving system of the rubber tyred gantry crane, enabling the entire crane to move smoothly along the working area. Powered by hydraulic or electric drive systems, it provides stable traveling performance even under heavy loads. This mechanism also allows flexible steering and 360-degree rotation, making the crane highly adaptable for container yards, ports, warehouses, and outdoor logistics operations. Its strong mobility improves operational efficiency and reduces dependence on fixed rail systems.

♦Lifting Mechanism

The lifting mechanism is the core working unit responsible for raising and lowering heavy loads safely and efficiently. It mainly consists of hoists, wire ropes, drums, pulleys, and motors. With precise control and stable lifting performance, the mechanism directly determines the crane’s lifting capacity and working efficiency. Advanced lifting systems are designed with overload protection, smooth speed regulation, and reliable braking functions to ensure safe handling of containers and heavy materials during operation.

♦Gantry Frame

The gantry frame is the primary steel structure of the rubber tyred gantry crane. It is composed of main girders, supporting legs, cross beams, and connecting structures that form a stable portal-shaped frame. The gantry supports the trolley and bears the overall working load of the crane. Manufactured from high-strength steel, the frame offers excellent rigidity, durability, and wind resistance, ensuring stable operation even in demanding outdoor environments such as ports and shipyards.

♦Diesel Generator

The diesel generator provides reliable power support for the crane’s traveling, lifting, and electrical systems. Designed for fuel efficiency and low emissions, it ensures stable operation in outdoor applications where external power supply may be unavailable. Modern generators are equipped with intelligent monitoring systems that help optimize fuel consumption, reduce maintenance costs, and improve operational reliability. Their rugged design also ensures excellent performance under harsh working conditions.

♦Electrical System

The electrical system is the control center of the rubber tyred gantry crane. It integrates controllers, sensors, cables, power distribution units, and communication devices to coordinate all crane movements. Advanced electrical systems provide precise speed control, stable operation, and energy-efficient performance. They also support automation functions, fault diagnosis, and remote monitoring, helping operators improve working efficiency and reduce downtime.

♦Safety Devices

Safety devices are essential components that ensure safe crane operation. These devices include overload limiters, emergency stop systems, anti-collision devices, buffers, wind alarms, and travel limit switches. They continuously monitor the crane’s operating condition and immediately respond to abnormal situations to prevent accidents. By providing real-time protection for both operators and equipment, safety systems greatly improve the reliability and safety of rubber tyred gantry crane operations.

Applications

♦Port Container Terminals

Rubber tyred gantry cranes are widely used in modern port container terminals for efficient container handling operations. They are mainly responsible for transferring containers between ships, trucks, and storage yards. With flexible mobility and high stacking capability, RTG cranes can quickly organize containers in limited yard spaces and significantly improve cargo turnover efficiency. Their ability to operate continuously under high-intensity conditions makes them an essential solution for busy seaports and international shipping hubs.

♦Railway Freight Terminals

In railway container terminals, rubber tyred gantry cranes play a key role in intermodal transportation. They are used to load and unload containers between freight trains and storage areas quickly and accurately. Compared with traditional lifting equipment, RTG cranes provide greater flexibility because they do not rely on fixed rails. This helps railway logistics centers improve operational efficiency, reduce waiting times, and support the fast movement of goods across long-distance transportation networks.

♦Logistics and Container Yards

RTG cranes are also widely applied in logistics parks, freight stations, and container storage yards. They are ideal for stacking, destacking, and short-distance transportation of containers and heavy cargo. Their compact structure and flexible steering system allow efficient operation even in narrow working spaces. By maximizing yard utilization and improving cargo handling speed, rubber tyred gantry cranes help logistics companies reduce operating costs and enhance overall warehouse management efficiency.

♦Inland Ports and Waterway Hubs

In inland ports and river transportation hubs, rubber tyred gantry cranes provide a highly economical and flexible lifting solution. Unlike rail-mounted gantry cranes, RTG cranes do not require complex rail infrastructure, which greatly reduces construction and maintenance costs. This makes them especially suitable for medium-sized ports, temporary cargo terminals, and trackless working environments. Their mobility and adaptability allow operators to handle various container sizes efficiently while maintaining stable performance in outdoor operations.

♦Industrial and Special Cargo Applications

Besides container handling, rubber tyred gantry cranes are also suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications such as steel plants, manufacturing facilities, and large equipment assembly yards. They can be customized to handle oversized cargo, machinery components, and project materials, providing reliable lifting solutions for different industries with demanding operational requirements.
